Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn (4th Edition): The Complete Guide by Penny Simkin, April Bolding, Ann Keppler, Janelle Durham and Janet Whalley

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn (4th Edition): The Complete Guide by Penny Simkin, April Bolding, Ann Keppler, Janelle Durham and Janet Whalley

This book, predominantly by childbirth educators and doulas, provides a comprehensive compendium of situations from the start of pregnancy, right through to post-partum complications.

It presents the myriad of medical options during childbirth in a straightforward and unbiased way and has comprehensive sections on pain relief, birth plans, birthing options, breastfeeding etc.

Although the authors make a fair stab at being even handed with the options, they clearly have a bias towards the natural birth experience, but even if you don’t think that’s the option for you, there is still enough material in this book to make it worth buying.

Given the authors’ experiences as a doula, it is not surprising that this book would be an excellent companion for those taking a supporting role during the childbirth.
